How to add a parking brake alarm to your Kawasaki Teryx

If you own a Kawasaki Teryx, you know how easy it is to drive off with the parking brake on. Troy overĀ  on TeryxForums.net has a simple and inexpensive solution.

I’ve had a few requests how to wire a warning buzzer that alerts only when the brake is applied & shifted into gear. This will not alert when the neutral light is on.

I have an ’09 with the digital dash, so I’m not positive if this will apply to a non digital dash, as far as the wire color goes. If I had to guess I would say it’s the same.

Parts needed, “bosch” style relay (radio shack #275-226) & piezo buzzer (radio shack #273-068).

Access to the harness is under hood & behind the dash, so removal of hood is a necessary first step.

Locate the wires that come out the rear of the digital dash & follow them to the grey plug. I soldered my connection (87) on the dash “side” of the harness (lime/silver wire). You can use t-taps or whatever else, but I like the positive connection of soldering.

I made a “Y” that simply plugs into the green/brown wire with male & female butt connectors. The other end goes to post 86 on the relay.

I can’t remember where I tapped into for the 12v to the relay. I added several electrical items at the same time I did this so it probably comes straight from the battery, which I recommend. I wouldn’t tap into a factory 12v wire, but that’s me.

Wiring the relay:
30: to buzzer
85: 12v
86: to green/brown (parking brake)
87: to lime/silver (shift indicator)
87a: not used

Bosch Relay

The relay is needed because the neutral light wire has power only when the light is off (something I don’t quite understand, but that’s how it works). So the relay simply gives the buzzer 12v power when the light is on.

Some interesting read on how a bosch relay works if interested http://www.bcae1.com/relays.htm. Which may come in handy if you’re going to add some lights or other accessories.

Radio Shack Buzzer
Hope this all makes sense. I’ve had it wired up this way for a little over a year & it works great.
